Our chapter has won this award the past 26 out of 30 years. This award is granted to the fraternity that scores best overall in seven categories. They include: Scholarship , Leadership, Philanthropy, Intramurals, Greek Week, Homecoming, and Educational Programming. It was named after a popular former dean, recognized as a supporter of Georgia Tech’s Greek system.
This is the highest honor a chapter of Beta Theta Pi can receive. Wes Wilson, Georgia Tech 1998, Casey Strine, Georgia Tech 1998, and Andy Anderson, Georgia Tech 1997, were among the brothers at the 158th General Convention that wrote the requirements. This award is intended to make good chapters even better. Gamma Eta was honored to receive the Knox Award in 2004 and, more recently, repeated this honor in 2006.
This award is given to all chapters which meet all of the General Fraternity’s chapter expectations. The award was originally given out in 1917 to the Missouri chapter. In 1982 the award was revitalized. Auburn was the only chapter to win the award that year. Our chapter did not apply. We did apply in 1983 and have done so each year since, winning the award twenty-four straight years. This streak is unrivaled by any other Beta chapter.
Our chapter applied for this award for the first time in 1997, and our entry was selected as one of the three finalists, along with Furman and the eventual winner, Lawrence.
A service award and an honorable mention are presented in each year of two categories, Best Annual Service Project and Best Ongoing Service Project. In 1992 and 1993, we received the award for Best Ongoing Service Project. In 1997, we received the award for Best Annual Service Project for our work with the Atlanta Dogwood Festival. In addition, we have picked up several honorable mentions.
In 1995, our chapter advisor, Gary A. Piligian, Georgia Tech 1982, won the award for his hard work in making the dream of a new L’il Tara into a reality.
This award is given to the chapter in each of eight geographic regions that has the highest chapter GPA with respect to their school’s GPA. In 2002, we won the award for Region 8. By devoting ourselves to the cultivation of the intellect, we should win this award again in the near future.
